Re-engaging latinx English learners in middle school: an action research study

Abstract

This two cycle Action Research study, was framed by the question, "How can students, families, teachers, and administrators from the Northeast middle school community play a role in reengaging Latinx, English Learners?" Cycle 1 included educators, students, and parents as participants. Data collection tools included surveys, interviews, and focus groups to identify factors contributing to Latinx ELs engagement or disengagement with middle school. The responses helped to shape the Cycle 2 action step which involved collaborating with students in a high school mentorship program to isolate those aspects of a program that could potentially reengage Latinx youth. Interactive discussions and problem-solving activities were used during Cycle 2 to gather student opinions and involve them in crafting solutions to reconnecting disengaged Latinx EL students. The findings of this study were captured as the "Rs of Engagement"rapport, relationships, relevance, relatability, rapport, and relationships.Recommendations for the research site include enabling the student's proposed pilot program, while simultaneously motivating other stakeholders to push for foundational changes to the local education culture.
