The article presents the principles of the program to restore the Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus in Poland and the results obtained to date. Since 2004, various life cycle stages (fertilized eggs, hatchlings, fingerlings) obtained through the controlled reproduction of wild spawners caught in the St John River in Canada have been imported. Broodstocks are held in three facilities, two of which were built specifically for the Atlantic sturgeon restoration programme. From each group of the initial imports from Canada, 50-100 individuals are being held for further rearing. Additionally about fifty individuals from the 1997 and 2001 year classes were transferred from the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (Berlin, Germany). These are also the offspring of earlier imports from Canada. Juvenile sturgeons are used for experimental stocking and studies aimed at increasing rearing effectiveness. Rearing early life cycle stages of Atlantic sturgeon was a difficult task, the final results of which remained unpredictable in early trials. The highest losses of larvae are incurred when the fish begin exogenous feeding. Feeding studies focus on the selection of appropriate diets and feeding strategies. The latest results indicate that during the initial feeding period, the fish can be fed once daily. Studies on sturgeon migration were conducted in the Drwęca River, and the results indicated that migration rates vary significantly among juvenile sturgeon, with the mean migration rate in spring being lower than in autumn. Currently, the Polish efforts to restore the Atlantic sturgeon focusses on (i) building broodstocks at specialized facilities, (ii) improving hatching and early rearing techniques, (iii) performing experimental stocking with hatchery-reared juveniles, and (iv) acquiring knowledge on the basic elements of the Atlantic sturgeon life history under local conditions. Fertilized eggs of A. o. oxyrinchus will still have to be imported from Canada for several years before self-sufficient production from raised ex-situ brood stocks will become available. The formation of a Polish ex-situ founder population is imbedded in an overall restoration approach in close cooperation with the neighbouring country having shared sturgeon waters and this is in line with the respective international recommendations for sturgeon species conservations.

Aim In the 19th/early 20th century, overfishing caused a drastic decline and finally extinction of the local sturgeon populations in the eastern Atlantic. To date, it is not known whether it was Acipenser sturio or the primarily North American Acipenser oxyrinchus that occurred here. The aim of the study was to show the historical pattern of sturgeon distribution and their diversity in this area over the last 2500 years. This question is essential for international restoration programmes. Location North‐east Atlantic. Methods The study is based on 438 archaeological sturgeon remains from the estuaries of the rivers Rhine, Ems, Weser, Elbe and Eider. All bones were analysed morphologically and in 38 cases genetically by the amplification of two mitochondrial DNA fragments. Results The data from the bones older than 1000 years show that only 1.4% derive from A. sturio. In the south, this species was slightly more frequent. From the Elbe northwards, A. oxyrinchus was for a long time by far the dominant sturgeon species. Main conclusions The genetic identification of the oldest sturgeon bone shows A. oxyrinchus occurred in the north‐eastern Atlantic already 6000 years ago. Consequently, the immigration of this species from North America to Europe occurred even earlier, potentially during the last glacial. The north–south occurrence of the two sturgeon species suggests that the distribution was the result of interspecific competition under different and changing environmental conditions. As previously published, genetic data from about 100‐ to 200‐year‐old museum specimens show strong dominance of A. sturio in the North Sea area, obviously A. oxyrinchus has been replaced in the time between 1000 and 200 years ago. Therefore, the Holocene distribution of sturgeons in the north‐east Atlantic had a complex pattern. Determining the ecological bases of this distribution is important for the justification and success of restoration programmes.

Abstract.A broodstock was created with individuals from the diminishing natural sterlet, Acipenser ruthenus L., population in the upper area of the Dniester basin. Selects and spawners were reared in flow-through tanks with natural thermal regimes. This is the first time artificial reproduction has been performed with this species, followed by incubation and larval rearing. The experimental rearing was conducted in tanks in a recirculating aquaculture system, in which the basic environmental quality parameters were controlled, including water temperature, oxygen saturation, and levels of ammonia and nitrite. During rearing, growth rates and proximate composition of larvae and then juvenile were examined. It was confirmed that during the period of endogenous feeding there was a two-fold decrease in the contents of protein and lipids in the bodies of the larvae. The effects of feeding the sterlet juvenile two different types of commercial feed were compared, and it was confirmed that the feed had a significant impact on sterlet growth rates. The mean daily increase in the body weight of sterlet juvenile fed Skretting feed was 1.91%, while that in the group fed Aller feed was 0.97%. Additionally, the juvenile from the former group was characterized by higher contents of protein and lipids in both the liver and muscle and the fatty acid profile was more varied.
