Re-validation and re-description of an endemic and threatened species, Aphanius pluristriatus (Jenkins, 1910) (Teleostei, Cyprinodontidae), from southern Iran

Abstract: Aphanius pluristriatus (Jenkins, 1910) (Cyprinodontidae) is a poorly known species from Fasa, located in the Mond Riverdrainage system, east of Shiraz, southern Iran. It has not been investigated since its first description, its validity has beenquestioned and a synonymy with A. sophiae (Heckel, 1849) has been suggested. In this study, we describe a new collectionof Aphanius specimens from the Zarjan spring system, which is probably the same spring system from where Jenkins(1910) collected the type specimens o… Show more

“…Similar to other species of Aphanius (Esmaeili et al, 2012), A. farsicus exhibits strong sexual dimorphism. In order to understand the variation between the populations, males and females were therefore analysed separately and comparisons always refer to sets of individuals of the same sex.…”

“…Moreover, the distinctive pattern of white flank bars in the males of Aphanius species represents a significant character for the discrimination of at least some Aphanius species such as A. cf. pluristriatus and A. arakensis (see Esmaeili et al 2012;Teimori et al 2012b). Also the number of white flank bars of A. shirini is significant as it comprises the lowest number known from Iranian Aphanius species.…”

“…Their current distribution includes coastal habitats of the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea and Persian Gulf, as well as brackish, freshwater and euryhaline inland water bodies in Iran, Pakistan and India. The highest species diversity is found in the endorheic basins of central Anatolia and south-western Iran and clearly linked to vicariance events caused by the geological history and associated changes in drainage systems (Wildekamp 1993;Wildekamp et al 1999;Coad 2000;Hrbek et al 2002Hrbek et al , 2006Hrbek and Meyer 2003;Esmaeili et al 2012;Teimori et al 2012a,b).…”

“…They were commonly identified as Aphanius sophiae (Heckel, 1849) (Coad and Abdoli 2000; Kamal et al 2009); however, it was shown that the true Aphanius sophiae is restricted to the endorheic Kor River basin near Shiraz (Fars Province) (Coad 2009; Esmaeili et al 2012). This study describes a newly discovered Aphanius population from the Namak Lake basin in northern central Iran (Fig.…”
