“…Similar observations were made byMikheeva et al during their studies of the reaction between LiH and AlCl 3 in ethereal solutionit was noticed that slow addition of AlCl 3 prevented decomposition of newly formed alane and improved the yield of LiAlH 4[86]. Hence, similar to previously described LiH-AlCl 3 system[94], the possible explanation of why the reaction between NaH and AlCl 3 in a 3:1 molar ratio leads to metallic Al is because of the relatively low fraction of hydride source in the 3:1 mixture (compared to 9:1), which may not be sufficiently dispersed, leading to high local AlCl3 :NaH ratios.…”

“…The hydrogen evolution associated with this reaction is small, approximately 1% of the theoretical total, as found by Garner. Considering the difficulty in obtaining and maintaining absolute purity of LiAlH 4 , and also the magnitude of the heat effect, an impurity reaction of the type shown in Equation 1is considered by Mikheeva et al [31] the cause of the first exothermic peak. This is confirmed by examining samples deliberately exposed to the atmosphere, where the first exothermic peak increases with the exposure.…”
