“…Since the publication of a preliminary report of the work here set forth, Lacassagne and Nyka (17), using benzpyrene instead of tar, have confirmed its findings, and Andrewes, AhlstrSm, Foulds, and Gye (18) have studied the alterative effects of tar upon the outcome of infection with the virus which gives rise to rabbit "fibromas." Ordinarily this virus causes connective tissue growths which are restricted to the immediate site of inoculation and regularly retrogress after a few weeks of active proliferation.…”

“…Thus no explanation can be advanced which will fit all the evidence, unless one is prepared to consider the assumption of a filterable agent with duplex capabilities, able to induce inflammation under some circumstances and neoplasia under others. The situation in such a case would resemble that described by Andrewes and Shope (8)(9)(10), in which there was encountered an aberrant inflammatory strain of the rabbit "fibroma" virus. Another variant of this virus has been recorded by Berry (11), and many other viruses are known to undergo qualitative changes in pathogenicity without alteration of immunogenic power, the variant strains continuing to crossimmunize.…”

“…It was not demonstrable either directly or on immunological test. Another sarcoma that appeared under the same circumstances failed to grow on transplantation (13). Morphological evidence of the formative influence of the rabbit papilloma virus can be discerned in many of the cancers springing from the growths it produces (14); and the persistence and increase of the virus have been demonstrated in two such cancers which were successfully transplanted, one of them to ten successive groups of animals (15).…”
