Reaction procedure of a graphite fiber reinforced Ti-Al composite produced by squeeze casting-in situ reaction

Abstract: The in situ reaction procedure and microstructure evolution of a graphite fiber reinforced Ti-Al composite (Grf/Ti-Al) was investigated, and the stability of TiAl 3 at high temperature was discussed. As-cast material was prepared by pressing molten pure aluminum into a preform, which was composed of titanium particles and graphite fibers. The in situ reaction procedure of the as-cast material was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and phases in the products were detected by X-ray diffract… Show more

“…As shown in Figure 14b, all the TiC in the shell of Al-4Ti-1D (10 µm) is particle-like with almost the same size, while some plate-like TiC is formed in the shell of Al-4Ti-1D (6 µm), and the size of particle-like TiC also has a large difference, as Figure 14d shows. It has been reported that TiC formed by Al 4 C 3 and Ti reactions is easy to become plate-like [32,33]. Therefore, it is considered that the core-shell particles prepared from 6 µm diamond have simultaneous Al-C and Ti-C reactions on the diamond surface.…”

“…Carbon fibers have been more and more widely used in the fields of aerospace and petrochemical and medical treatment (Sheehan et al, 1994;Park and Kim, 2010), owing to their unique stabilities, elastic moduli, strengths, stiffness, thermal conductivities, and lightweightness (Ruland, 1990;Keiji et al, 2004;Wu et al, 2010). Nevertheless, the high stiffness of carbonfiber composite materials could lead to relatively low damping performance, in which case original cracks will be quickly propagated under the actions of periodic loads and external shocks, eventually resulting in vibration, fatigue, and failure (Khan et al, 2011;Fan et al, 2016).…”

“…The addition of Ti improved the wettability between the matrix and the reinforcement. In situ synthesis of Al 3 Ti occurred through the reaction of Ti with Al after sintering, further enhancing the strength and thermal stability of the composites [ 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 ]. Hot-pressing was then carried out to further improve the properties of the composites.…”
