Reaction products in mass spectrometry elucidated with infrared spectroscopy

Abstract: Determining the structure and dynamics of large biologically relevant molecules is one of the key challenges facing biology. Although X-ray crystallography (XRD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) yield accurate structural information, they are of limited use when sample quantities are low. Mass spectrometry (MS) on the other hand has been very successful in analyzing biological molecules down to atto-mole quantities and has hence begun to challenge XRD and NMR as the key technology in the life sciences. Thi… Show more

“…A 4.7 T Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometer, described elsewhere, [15][16][17] was used to record the IRMPD spectra. The metal-cysteine complex ions were generated using a Micromass Z-spray electrospray ionization source.…”

“…+ and its modified form [Thd + H] + were measured using a 4.7 T Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FT-ICR MS) [24][25][26]. Photodissociation was induced by the widely-tunable free electron laser for infrared experiments (FELIX) [27] and an OPO/ OPA laser system to examine the IR fingerprint and hydrogenstretching regions, respectively.…”

“…19 Protonated corannulene cations were produced by electrospray ionization (ESI), and for this purpose, corannulene was dissolved in methanol with a small amount of ammonium acetate added, as was previously used for several PAH species. 20 Ions were accumulated in a hexapole trap prior to injection into the ion cyclotron resonance cell, where the ions were mass-isolated and subsequently irradiated for 7 s at each IR frequency.…”
