Reactions of human dental pulp cells to capping agents in the presence or absence of bacterial exposure

Abstract: An ideal pulp-capping agent needs tohave good biocompatibility and promote reparative dentinogenesis. Although the effects of capping agents on healthy pulp are known, limited data regarding their effects on bacterial contaminated pulp are available. This study aimed to evaluate the reaction of contaminated pulps to various capping agents to assist clinicians in making informed decisions. Human dental pulp (HDP) cell cultures were developed from extracted human molars. The cells were exposed to a bacterial coc… Show more

“…In the present study, MTA and Dycal were used as control materials to be compared to TheraCal LC, as both cements are the gold standard in pulp capping procedures (17), mainly due to their biocompatibility and proven bioactivity (2,3,(7)(8)(9). Surprisingly, TheraCal LC expanded in both experimental periods higher than recommended by the Specification No.…”

“…Medcem MTA root-end-fillings have shown low leakage [ 37 ]. Medcem Medical Portland Cement (MMPC) is recommended for direct and indirect capping of permanent and primary teeth and for pulpotomy, perforation repair, and apexification [ 38 ]. Because it contains only Portland cement with no additional ingredients, it is believed that MMPC does not cause tooth discoloration.…”

“…Anyhow, pain is the main symptom associated with pulpal injuries or post failure endodontic treatments. Nevertheless, it is not uncommon that pulp necrosis occurs with little or no pain [3][4][5]. There is no report in the literature regarding the presence of an early sign of pulp necrosis preceding pulpal pain, incomplete endodontic fillings or radiographically complete endodontic fillings performed under unsterilized conditions.…”
