Reactions of Tetralin with Tritiated Molecular Hydrogen on Pt/Al2O3, Pd/Al2O3, and Pt−Pd/Al2O3Catalysts

Abstract: Reactions of tetralin with tritiated gaseous hydrogen were carried out at 5.00 MPa and at 200−400 °C on several noble metal catalysts prepared:  Pt/Al2O3, Pd/Al2O3, and Pt−Pd/Al2O3. Hydrogenation and dehydrogenation activities of the catalysts were compared. By tracing changes in the radioactivities of 3H in the products before and after reaction, amounts of the hydrogen exchange between tetralin and tritiated hydrogen were measured to determine the behavior of hydrogen in the reaction. Further, effects of sul… Show more

“…Zoning and layering different Pt‐Pd ratio catalysts may have implications on the sulphur poisoning and deactivation of these catalysts. Bimetallic Pt‐Pd catalysts are more sulphur resistant than both Pt and Pd monometallic catalysts . This increased sulphur resistance for bimetallic catalysts has been related to a decrease of electron density on Pt induced by bimetallic interactions, and these interactions may depend on the precursors and pretreatments used in catalyst preparation .…”

“…This increased sulphur resistance for bimetallic catalysts has been related to a decrease of electron density on Pt induced by bimetallic interactions, and these interactions may depend on the precursors and pretreatments used in catalyst preparation . For hydrogenation/dehydrogenation reactions, the sulphur tolerance of Pd was higher than that of Pt; whereas, the opposite has been found for oxidation reactions . In both cases, however, bimetallic Pt‐Pd catalysts have generally shown improved sulphur tolerance, depending on the Pt:Pd ratio.…”

“…It has been reported in the literature that the aromatic compounds present in LCO are mostly the diaromatics (naphthalenes) compounds [5]. The hydrogenation of these diaromatics in fuels into monoaromatics is easy, but their complete saturation is more difficult due to reversibility of hydrogenation reaction [5,6]; hence in the hydrogenation and SRO studies, tetralin and naphthalene have been often considered as model molecules representative of diesel fuels [5][6][7][8].…”

“…A hydrogen storage system with cyclic saturated hydrocarbons is OPEN ACCESS more stable and inexpensive than systems with inorganic hydrogen-adsorbing alloys. Hydrogenation of aromatic compounds is important for the production of high performance diesel fuel (low aromatic diesel fuels) [5][6][7][8]. Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs) are components of coal tar, creosote and crude oil, and are formed by incomplete combustion of organic materials.…”
