Reactions of the Cobaltaborane 2,4-{(η5-C5Me5)Co}2B3H7with Metal Fragments. Synthesis and Characterization ofnido-1-{(η5-C5Me5)Co}-2-{(CO)3Fe}B3H7andarachno-(η5-C5Me5)(CO)CoB3H7

Abstract: The reactions of nido-2,4-(Cp*Co) 2 B 3 H 7 , 1, Cp* ) (η 5 -C 5 Me 5 ), with Fe 2 (CO) 9 and Co 2 (CO) 8 generate seven skeletal electron pair (sep) nido-1-{Cp*Co}-2-((CO) 3 Fe)B 3 H 7 , 2, by metal fragment substitution and seven sep arachno-Cp*(CO)CoB 3 H 7 , 3, by metal fragment degradation. Both compounds are characterized spectroscopically in solution and with singlecrystal X-ray diffraction in the solid state. On the basis of the results and related chemistry, the suggested reaction pathway involves M(C… Show more

“…The 11 B NMR spectrum reveals two boron environments, one (doublet of triplets) associated with two terminal hydrogen atoms and the other (doublet) with one terminal hydrogen. Both signal patterns are similar to those reported for known borallyl complexes, such as [{Cp*Co(CO)}B 3 H 7 ] [32] and [{(PPh 3 ) 2 Ir(CO)H}B 3 H 7 ], [15] , and Group 10 tetraborane clusters. [33±38] The IR spectrum also shows the three B ± H stretching bands of the borallyl fingerprint.…”

“…It constitutes the second structurally characterized ªborallylº species with the general formula [{Cp*M(CO)}B 3 H 7 ] (M Co, Ir). [32] Attempts to prepare 7 by the direct reaction of 1 with carbon monoxide at room temperature or higher temperatures failed. Consequently, it must result from the reaction of 1 with [Co 2 (CO) 8 ].…”

“…1 H NMR spectroscopy demonstrates the existence of three B‐H terminal hydrogen atoms, two B‐H‐B bridging hydrogen atoms, and one Ir‐H hydride as well as the presence of a Cp* ring and a PMe 3 ligand. The proposed structure of 4 (Scheme ) is that of well‐known metal “borallyl” complexes such as 1 ,15 [(PPh 3 ) 2 (CO)HIrB 3 H 7 ],16 [(Cp*)Co(CO)B 3 H 7 ],17 and Group 10 metallatetraboranes 18–23…”

“…[13c,16b, [31][32][33][34][35] Besides the Cp* protons, the 1 H{ 11 B} NMR spectrum of 2 reveals eight protons associated with the boron cage in an integral ratio of 1:1:2:2:2, where two equivalent BHB and FeHB protons appeared at -1.87 and -15.43 ppm, respectively. The room-temperature 1 H NMR spectrum of 2 for the [B 3 H 8 ] fragment protons clearly reveals that the molecule is not fluxional.…”
