Reactive Dye House Wastewater Treatment. Use of Hybrid Technology:  Membrane, Sonication Followed by Wet Oxidation

Abstract: To address problems associated with treatment of an aqueous waste stream from a reactive dye house, a model dye, turquoise blue CI25, was studied. A hybrid technology, membrane separation followed by sonication and wet oxidation, has been demonstrated to treat the wastewater for reuse and discharge. Experiments were first performed with the reactive dye solution in water. A nanofiltration membrane (MPT 30) was found to be suitable to concentrate the dye. The concentrate was then treated with a wet oxidation pr… Show more

“…An electron flow originating from the lone pair on the tertiary nitrogen toward the oxygen of the HOCl molecule, results in the addition of a hydroxyl group to the Brilliant Blue-R, intermediate, I 1 . Electrons from the p bond in the alkene then form a cyclopropane cation with the concomitant loss of the hydroxyl group resulting in I 2 .…”

“…The effluents from reactive dye baths are highly-coloured streams containing hydrolysed dye together with auxiliary chemicals. 3 Thus, wastewater reclamation in this industry is highly desirable because of the opportunities to reduce both the volumes of wastewater produced and the water consumed. Membrane processes can be used for the purification of these complex wastewater streams.…”
