Reactive Maleimido Dextran Thin Films for Cysteine-Containing Surfaces Adsorbing BSA

Abstract: The modification of surfaces by functional coatings or postmodification of films to control the adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) is carried out. Surface functionalization with maleimido groups is achieved by spin coating of dextran derivatives. The layers are stabilized on the support material during thermal treatment or cross‐linking. The thin films are characterized by atomic force microscopy, quartz crystal microbalance, FTIR spectroscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Surface morphology, hy… Show more

“…For instance, by the synthesis of dextran maleimido carbonates, furan was used as a protecting group as it formed the Diels–Alder adduct with maleimide groups. Namely, 4‐(2‐hydroxy‐ethyl)‐10‐oxa‐4‐azatricyclo[5.2.1.0 2,6 ]dec‐8‐ene‐3,5‐dion was activated with CDI and converted with the biopolymer in DMSO in the presence of trimethylamine . Furan‐protected dextran maleimido carbonates were synthesized with high efficiency ( Table 4 ).…”

“…The thickness of all films was in the range from 20 to 80 nm and they were described as insoluble in water and organic solvents. A hornification of the polysaccharide backbone and cross‐linking of the functional moieties was most likely to occur …”
