Reactive Processing of Recycled Polycarbonate/Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene

Abstract: Cellular phone housings were ground to make original particulates using a knife mill. Foams and adhesives with a lighter density than water were removed from ground mixtures using a sink-float process in water; ground metals, button rubbers, and wires were separated from desired materials by using a sink float process in salt All housing materials, consisting of seven thermoplastics included in cellular phone housings, showed better tensile properties than pure housing materials made of polycarbonate/acrylonit… Show more

“…Likewise, vibrations at 698 cm −1 (styrene units), 1602 cm −1 (aromatic CC stretching) and 3066 cm −1 (CH out of plane deformation) were observed for the styrene segments of the neat SBR . In terms of acrylic acid, the most prominent bands were the sharp carbonyl vibration at 1718 cm −1 , and the very broad OH stretching band at 3147 cm −1 (b) . Furthermore, the bands at 1405 and 1180 cm −1 were due to the COH inplane deformation and CO stretching vibrations within the AA structure .…”

“…These authors pointed out a decrease or an inconspicuous improvement in the tensile strength because the anhydride groups could only react with hydroxyl groups but could not react with carboxyl groups. Jung and coworkers blended R‐PC/ABS with polyethylene (PE; 50 phr), epoxy resins (2 phr), and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA; 0.05 phr); this improved the modulus, breaking stress, stress at yield, and energy to break, although there were reductions in the impact strength, strain at break, strain at yield, and energy to yield. Meanwhile, GMA as a liquid is difficult to add during the melt‐extrusion process.…”

“…In addition, despite the lack of conclusive data regarding to the toxicity of Sb and its compounds, Sb 2 O 3 is classied as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. 17 Considering the analytical aspects of polymers from e-waste, some of the drawbacks to performing these analyses are the complexity and diversity of this matrix (commonly composed of blends of polymers), 4,18 which normally requires timeconsuming or extensive sample preparation routines (e.g. digestion for spectrometric methods, and extraction and dissolution/precipitation for chromatographic analysis).…”
