“…Over time, the number of examined forms has increased: While period one (1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002) features only two forms, period two (2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007) already features seven forms and the last two periods feature all twelve forms. Recent trends of restricting comment opportunities for audiences after years of expanding comment sections (Ziegele, 2019) illustrate journalists' retention of power. That studies from the audience perspective see shared power much more often than studies from the journalist perspective could be explained by the fact that the audience may have only little understanding of the professional news production process and therefore be unaware of all the places journalists (can and do) limit the impact of audience participation.…”

“…Comment sections online, for example, have become some of the most popular participatory spaces adopted by news websites (Hille & Bakker, 2014;Springer et al, 2015;Tenenboim & Cohen, 2015;Weber, 2014;Ziegele, 2019). Florian Toepfl and Eunike Piwoni (2015) argue that the increasing number of users gathering in blogs, forums, or alternative online media outlets, leads to the formation of "emergent counter-public collectives" (Teofl & Piwoni, 2015, p. 481) that can reveal divergent views to mainstream media.…”
