Readers’ Theatre: A Communication Tool for Colorectal Cancer Screening

Abstract: 94% (161/172) of participants from 11 Readers' Theatre completed a written evaluation. 90% (145) of participants reported feeling more comfortable talking about CRC and 77% (124) described healthy changes they planned to make. Readers' Theatre was associated with increased knowledge, comfort talking about CRC, and served as a catalyst for positive intent to change behavior.

“…McIvor (2010) even argued that self-determination and decolonization serve as the connection amongst all Indigenous research methods. For example, Dennis (2014) stated, "this study employed Indigenous Research Methodologies," (p. 34), and detailed the explicit methods including a qualitative approach and inductive data analysis.…”

“…The ability of reader's theatre to transform children's literature into active lessons where students read/recite lines from scripts transferred from an existing text or created scripts from their original stories is tremendous. Cueva, Dignan, and Kuhnley (2012) associated reader's theatre participants with increased knowledge acquisition, expanded comfort discussing critical yet tough issues, and greater intent to engage in positive behaviors. Reader's theatre studies note the impact of student vocalizations and expressive movements to heighten the reader's connection with the feelings, opinions and intentions of the texts' characters.…”
