Reading Performance in Patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa: A Study Using the MNREAD Charts

Abstract: The reading performance of most patients with RP is only moderately impaired. It correlates with contrast sensitivity, visual acuity, and visual field. It should be assessed in all cases, as disability can ensue, even when visual acuity is preserved. In patients with RP with poor reading performance, there is little potential for high-magnification devices because visual field constriction affects the reading rate.

“…However, too much enlargement has been shown to reduce reading speed as the result of reduced saccades. 17 In some reports, critical print size is typically 2 times larger than RA (ie, 0.3 logMAR difference), 3,6 which is similar to that found in our study.…”

“…MNREAD has been used to study the effects of age in adults with lens opacities 4 and to study reading ability in both pseudophakia and retinal diseases. [5][6][7] This test has also been used for age-specific reading performance in children in grades 3 through 8. 8 The MNREAD charts have not been used to study reading performance in individuals with albinism.…”

“…23 Reading ability was measured with the Italian version of Minnesota Reading (MNREAD) charts at 20 cm to obtain maximum RS (log10 words per minute), RA, and critical print size (recorded as logMAR) according to methods previously described. 24 Reading speed at variable levels of text contrast was obtained with REX test 7 at a distance of 20 cm, and the text contrast at which reading became impossible was recorded as log10 reading CS, which for clarity will be referred to as the reading contrast threshold, or the one at which reading became impossible.…”

“…Contrast sensitivity is a significant predictor of reading 101 and mobility performance 102 in people with RP and will be discussed in depth later in this review. Clinical assessment of contrast sensitivity can be performed using expensive computer-generated stimuli, 103 simple card tests such as the Melbourne Edge Test 104 or low contrast letter charts like those of Pelli-Robson.…”
