Readmission to an intensive care unit after cardiac surgery: reasons and outcomes

Abstract: The most common cause of readmission to ICU is haemodynamic instability. Postoperative complication and in-hospital mortality rates are significantly higher in patients readmitted to ICU. Factors most commonly predisposing to readmission to ICU after cardiac surgery included advanced patient age, non-elective surgery, and longer initial stay in ICU after the surgery.

“…Respiratory causes have been emphasized in many studies as the most common cause of ICU readmission [ 16 - 20 ] . In some series, cardiac causes were more pronounced [ 13 , 21 ] . In our study, the most common reason for ICU readmission was respiratory pathologies, followed by cardiac causes.…”

“…Six articles (9,(11)(12)(13)(14)(15) compared the length of hospital stay between patients readmitted to the ICU and patients not readmitted to the ICU. There was heterogeneity between the articles (I 2 =99.7%, P<0.001).…”

“…In the health field, DRSA has been mainly used as a tool to discover knowledge from data, e.g., to identify metabolites involved in disease pathogenesis [41] or to identify which factors predispose patients to return to intensive care units after cardiac surgery [42]. VDA has been mainly used as a diagnostic tool in the neuropsychology and neurologic disease domains (e.g., [43,44]).…”
