Real Assessment of Maximum Oxygen Uptake as a Verification After an Incremental Test Versus Without a Test

Abstract: The study was conducted to compare peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) measured with the incremental graded test (GXT) (VO2peak) and two tests to verify maximum oxygen uptake, performed 15 min after the incremental test (VO2peak1) and on a separate day (VO2peak2). The aim was to determine which of the verification tests is more accurate and, more generally, to validate the VO2max obtained in the incremental graded test on cycle ergometer. The study involved 23 participants with varying levels of physical activity. An… Show more

“…However, the exercise test protocol used in previous studies [ 25 ] is not commonly used in the diagnosis of performance capacity. Efforts lasting several minutes at 110% Pmax are more commonly performed in tests to verify VO 2 max [ 32 , 59 , 60 , 61 ]. Similar efforts are also used during training [ 29 ].…”

“…A graded exercise test (GXT) was performed to determine aerobic power [ 25 , 32 ]. The test was conducted on a Lode Excalibur Sport cycloergometer (Lode B.V., Groningen, The Netherlands), which was calibrated before the start of the study.…”

“…VO 2 peak is a marker of exercise capacity in healthy people and patients with various diseases. VO 2 peak reflects the function and interaction among the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, the efficiency of muscle oxygen consumption, and mitochondrial function [ 41 , 42 ]. After VO 2 is normalized to HR, the O 2 pulse becomes a noninvasive proxy of stroke volume, indirectly reflecting myocardial contractility [ 43 , 44 ].…”

“…Such efforts lead to lower blood lactate levels 20 compared to repeated sprints lasting 30 s each 14 . In addition, efforts performed with a power of 110% Pmax are used in performance diagnostics to verify peak oxygen uptake obtained in progressive tests 13 , 21 . However, the procedure described by Jastrzębska et al 10 has some shortcomings.…”
