Real-time digital simulator with digital/analog conversion interface for testing power instruments

Abstract: The need for real-time simulation stems from the fact that in many practical situations it is desirable to analyze the dynamic behavior of a large power system with advanced equipment that has complex and high-speed performance. Analog simulators are effective, however they impose serious limitations on the size of the system that is being modeled. We have studied and developed a realtime digital simulator using a hypercube computer, and realized a realtime performance available for the analysis of large power… Show more

“…To couple the model of the induction machine with the inverter, the stator currents obtained from the induction machine model are used as commanded currents to an ac/ac converter that is coupled to the inverter. In [7], a utility power system is modeled using a combination of real-time digital models of components and hardware components. The interaction of digital models of components and hardware of power system components is achieved using high-power amplifiers.…”

“…The interaction of digital models of components and hardware of power system components is achieved using high-power amplifiers. Details of the amplifier circuits are not provided in [7]. In [8], the researchers suggest possible approaches to partition hardware/software components for ac radial distribution systems.…”

“…Scaling systems up to larger power levels has been a topic of research since 1994 when one of the first PHIL systems was developed by Mitsubishi and Tokyo Electric Power engineers. In [20], they describe the digital to analog interface between the power amplifiers and real-time digital simulator.…”
