Real-Time Low Voltage Network Monitoring—ICT Architecture and Field Test Experience

Abstract: Traditionally, distribution network monitoring has been focused on primary substations (i.e., high voltage/medium voltage level), whereas low voltage (LV) network has not been monitored at all. With rapid growth and penetration of distributed energy resources in LV grids, there is growing interest in extending the real-time monitoring to LV level. The framework program FP7 European Project INTEGRIS proposes an integrated real-time LV network monitoring solution and implements it in a cost-efficient way. This s… Show more

“…Such bitrates are not easily manageable, for example, by narrowband power line communications [27] adopted for automatic meter reading, advanced metering infrastructure and other applications. Several pioneer projects are ongoing to define full communication infrastructures for MV/LV DNs, that are expected to be hybrid [28] (power line, wireless and optical fiber technologies) and hierarchical [29].…”

“…Considering the challenges faced by DNs, a first step to improve their automation level has consisted in adding a local supervisory system in PSs [14], [15]. Thus, a first decentralization of the network monitoring and control system has been implemented at the HV/MV level.…”

“…Due to the growing complexity related to the generation and consumption patterns at the LV level, monitoring and control issues concerning this level of the DN are becoming more relevant, being the focus of various DSOs research and development activities [12], [13], [15]. The SMs, recently being installed at the customer premises in various countries, represent an opportunity to enable advanced monitoring of the LV grid.…”

“…Smart meter data play a significant role in the smart grid. For instance, they can be used for (Low Voltage) LV network monitoring and can give feedback for the LV grid condition, as is done in [8] along with secondary substation measurements. In [9] smart meter measurements are used for low voltage grid state estimation; the authors proposed a cloud-based smart metering architecture, which allows scalability and interoperability for the meters.…”
