Real time measurement system based on wireless instrumented sphere

Abstract: In this work, we developed a new measurement system which includes a Wireless Instrumented Sphere (WIS) and a Graphical User Interface (GUI) software, called Real Time Analysis (RTA). This system is able to acquire, process and visualize the three axis acceleration of the WIS allowing the identification and measurements of rotations, vibrations and impacts in real time. The aim of this instrument is to help the fruit producers to reduce food wasting and improve quality, especially in Brazil, one of the major a… Show more

“…16,75 in a single data logging device, and these can be even presented in the form of instrumented spheres (IS) in the shape of a fruit. 109 An IS might be an ideal choice for impact studies such as capturing the shocks to fresh produce in a packaging or a sorting line. [110][111][112][113] At present, real-time monitoring of consignments in the supply chain involves remote acquisition of information on the proximity, temperature, humidity, and some gas concentrations during transit.…”

“…However, piezoelectric accelerometers with miniature integrated designs are now becoming available and increasingly popular for portable applications when coupled with external‐portable battery packs. With the rapid development in accelerometer technology, miniature devices can be developed with all systems embedded in a single data logging device, and these can be even presented in the form of instrumented spheres (IS) in the shape of a fruit . An IS might be an ideal choice for impact studies such as capturing the shocks to fresh produce in a packaging or a sorting line …”

“…Recently, Roa et al developed a wireless instrumented sphere (WIS) that can measure and display impacts in real time through a radio frequency transmitter [ 7 ]. Geyer et al developed a miniaturized tri-axial acceleration measuring unit (AMU) that can be embedded into a potato tube, and the AMU recorded average impact loads 1.11-times higher than what were recorded by PMS-60 [ 8 , 9 ].…”

“…A berry impact recording device (BIRD) of 25.4 mm diameter spherical shape was developed for measuring the mechanical impacts of small fruits like blueberries (Yu et al, 2011a(Yu et al, , 2011bXu et al, 2015). The wireless impact sphere, or WIS, is another device that is able to acquire, process, and visualize three-axis accelerations, allowing identification and measurement of rotations, vibrations, and impacts in real time (Roa et al, 2013(Roa et al, , 2015.…”
