Real Time Monitoring of Diesel Engine Injector Waveforms for Accurate Fuel Metering and Control

Abstract: This paper presents the development, experimentation, and validation of a reliable and robust system to monitor the injector pulse generated by an engine control module (ECM) which can easily be calibrated for different engine platforms and then feedback the corresponding fueling quantity to the real-time computer in a closed-loop controller in the loop (CIL) bench in order to achieve optimal fueling. This research utilizes field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) and direct memory access (DMA) transfer capabilit… Show more

“…Thus, the voltage signals at the low and high sides are useful for this purpose. Furthermore, in single-fuel engines, a readout of injector signals is often required for diagnosis purposes [21]. The design of the circuit interface and readout is challenging, since those signals exhibit peak values largely exceeding the regulated supply voltage of the readout of electronic circuits and the maximum input voltage that the involved devices can tolerate before incurring permanent damage.…”

“…By means of modeling the combustion processes, the possibilities of combining different fuels are tested, which results in improving the efficiency of utilizing the energy of the fuel with a simultaneous optimization of the exhaust gas composition [ 28 , 29 ]. Characteristics of the differential current of the current-related waveforms are analyzed, which enables the fault detection in injectors [ 30 , 31 ]. Modeling is useful as far as diagnostics is concerned for performing analyses, as well as determining the performance of a working element during changes of the work parameters and control values, due to which both the diagnostics and the process of the injector control can be advanced.…”

“…Mathematical models [6,7,8,9] were employed in analysis, using simulation programmes such as Matlab Simulink. Delays in opening and closing the gas injector have been discussed, based on the measurement of the increase in the pressure wave downstream of the injector, generated after its bias control [10,11]. The US6657847 patent application is very interesting; it describes using measurement of the injector core inductance to describe changes taking place during its operation [12].…”
