Air pollution is becoming a very important issue for the transportation sector, particularly car emissions in urban areas, and there is much interest in evaluating the actual level of emissions. In this paper, a case study of a standard driving cycle in the urban area of Dublin city is presented. On-road, speed-time data was extracted by an on-board diagnostic tool, and saved into a data acquisition package. Firstly, the driving cycle was established for the urban area of the city; one car travelling different routes has been employed to implement this research and some representative results have been achieved. The second part of the project was to estimate the emissions from the same car using the driving cycle obtained and compare the results with those obtained by a gas analyzer attached to the car simultaneously in order to validate the methodology used in this paper.A representative driving cycle reflecting the real-world driving conditions is proposed and estimated vehicle emissions were compared with measured results. The method is easy to follow and the results are in a good fit to the estimated values.

An on-board measurement system that can simultaneously obtain such information as road infrastructure, traffic conditions, driver's operations, vehicle running conditions, and exhaust mass emissions was installed in a light duty freight vehicle with an EGR system and in a minivan without an EGR system. In order to analyze the mechanism of roadside pollution caused by vehicles, road tests were carried out in real traffic conditions. The light duty freight vehicle showed intensive NOx pollution at the roadside in a vehicle start, in which the EGR rate was low, but it was effective to reduce NOx mass emissions at low speed running in traffic jams where the EGR rate was rather high. In the case of the minivan, intensive NOx pollution was observed in low speed running such as in traffic jams. The reduction of NOx during vehicle starts is important for vehicles with an EGR system to reduce intensive NOx pollution at roadsides.EGR system and in a minivan without an EGR system, and examined factors of intensive NOx pollution such as infrastructures of roads, traffic environment, and vehicle motion by measuring instantaneous NOx mass emissions. Thus, NOx pollution at local roadsides was analyzed from the aspects of vehicle motion and engine operation, by studying the relation of instantaneous vehicle speeds and instantaneous NOx emissions factors, the relation of instantaneous CO 2 and NOx mass emissions, and the relation of engine speed, engine torque, and instantaneous NOx emissions factors.

Investigation of vehicle emissions with an on-board emissions measurement system can provide a better understanding of how these emissions contribute to air pollution. This paper discusses the design and development by Imperial College London and industrial collaborators of a vehicle performance and emissions monitoring system, including its installation both on test vehicles allowing an interface with the engine management system and those that do not. Results from preliminary field trials and chassis dynamometer testing of the diesel test vehicle are presented. Good correlation between the monitoring system and reference measurements is observed, with differences in aggregate measurements of between 8% and 18% over a standard test cycle. The remote download and synthesis of navigation, performance and emissions data from an inuse vehicle was successfully achieved. This project has shown that it is possible to produce a system suitable for deployment for simultaneous studies over a wide area. However, the non-standard nature of engine management system interfaces for much of the European vehicle fleet presents a significant barrier to implementation. It is therefore recommended that European legislation be enforced to ensure standard interfaces on all new vehicles.
