Real-world observational results from a database of 48 million men in the United States: Relationship of cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and depression with age and erectile dysfunction

Abstract: In the real-world setting, ED diagnosis was associated with CVD, DM and depression across age groups, suggesting a need for inquiry about the potential for comorbidities among these men as a preventative measure against potentially serious future events.

“…This assessment was furthermore supported by the majority of men self-reporting frequent episodes of both nocturnal and morning erections. Interestingly, the assertion by Reed-Maldonado et al [6] that psychiatric comorbidities are more prevalent in men with proposed psychogenic ED holds true in the present cohort, as a prevalence of 23% is far above the national age-matched average [18]. 13 One-third of the men experienced full return of erectile function with no current need for medication.…”

“…PDE5i-nonresponsive ED patients always have comorbidities, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome, among others [15][16]. The nerves, blood vessels, and cavernous tissues in the penis can be injured as a result of these comorbidities, which is the basis of ED development [17][18].…”

“…Depending on the surgical procedure (retropubic, uni-or bilateral nerve sparing, laparoscopic/robotic techniques) the overall rate of ED in patients following radical prostatectomy/cystectomy has been determined to be 40-75% [46][47][48]. Among diabetics, the prevalence of ED ranges from 35% to almost 90% [49,50]. According to the Cologne Male Survey, patients with diabetes mellitus have an approximately four-fold higher risk for ED when compared to healthy males [51].…”
