Realization of 3-D Flexible Antennas Using Liquid Metal and Additive Printing Technologies

Abstract: International audienceThis letter proposes an approach for the realization of three-dimensional flexible antennas based on the use of liquid metal and additive printing technologies. As a representative example, a miniaturized inverted-F antenna (IFA) operating at 885 MHz and suitable for wearable applications is designed, realized, and measured. The antenna sensitivity to the bending is strongly reduced, thanks to the proposed structure. The performance of the antenna in several bent configurations and in pre… Show more

“…The commercially available Galinstan is yet another liquid metal alloy widely used as the antenna-radiating element [30][31][32]. It comprises of 68.5% gallium, 21.5% indium and 10% tin with an electrical conductivity similar to EGaIn [33,34].…”

“…PDMS is also used as an encapsulation layer in antennas after the antenna has been designed using other methods [20,43,44]. Several other commercially available flexible materials include EcoFlex silicone rubber [45] and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) based NinjaFlex [31], which are generally 3D printed to have desired LM patterning features.…”

“…The above‐mentioned antennas and filters are not considered flexibility. Based on the flexibility of the liquid metal and elastomeric substrate, a flexible microstrip patch antenna and a 3D flexible inverted‐F antenna are proposed. Like an antenna, a filter is also an important microwave element for frequency selection.…”
