Supporting end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) in existing network architectures is an ongoing problem. Although researchers from both academia and industry have proposed many solutions to solve the QoS limitations of the current networking, many of them either failed or were not implemented. Software Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm has emerged in response to limitations of traditional networking architectures. Its main advantages are the centralized global network view, programmability, and separation of the data plane and control plane. These features have got attention of researchers to improve the QoS provisioning of today's various network applications. In this survey paper, we aim at making a picture of QoS-motivated literature in OpenFlow-enabled SDN networks by comprehensively surveying relevant research studies. We organize the related studies according to the categories that are the most prominent ways in which QoS can benefit from the concept of SDN: Multimedia flows routing mechanisms, inter-domain routing mechanisms, resource reservation mechanisms, queue management and scheduling mechanisms, Quality of Experience (QoE)-aware mechanisms, network monitoring mechanisms, and other QoS-centric mechanisms such as virtualization-based QoS provisioning and QoS policy management etc. In addition, we discuss QoS capabilities of OpenFlow protocol by reviewing its versions along with some well-known, open-source, and community-driven controller projects. Furthermore, we outline the potential challenges and open problems that need to be addressed further for better and complete QoS abilities in SDN/OpenFlow networks and lessons we have learned during preparation of this survey paper.

a b s t r a c tOver the last few years, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has emerged as one of the most disruptive and profitable novelties in networking. SDN was originally conceived to improve performance and reduce costs in Ethernet-based networks and it has been widely adopted in data center and campus networks. Similarly, thanks to the introduction of SDN concepts, access networks will benefit from the higher control, the lower maintenance costs and the better remote access to devices of SDN. However, its application to access networks is not straightforward and imposes great challenges to vendors and network operators, since current SDN technologies are not prepared to handle the provisioning of user equipment, specific port management or QoS requirements of common access networks. Most recent trends dealing with the SDN-ization of access networks advocate for the use of simple devices at the customer premises and the virtualization of the networking functionalities, requiring the provisioning of Layer 2 services in many cases. In such a scenario, this paper presents an architecture that brings SDN to common access networks using legacy equipment. In a nutshell, the architecture is based on the abstraction of the access network as a wide area OpenFlow switch where QoS-enabled pipes are dynamically created leveraging the high granularity of the OpenFlow protocol for packet classification. Furthermore, the OpenFlow protocol itself has been extended in order to support the advanced QoS requirements that are common to most access networks. The architecture has been implemented for DOCSIS access networks and it has been validated and evaluated using a real testbed deployed at our laboratory. The obtained results show that the architecture remains compliant with the ITU-T QoS recommendations and that the cost of introducing the elements required by the architecture in terms of service performance is negligible.

Geo-distributed and heterog eneous Internet of Things (IoT) devices can gener ate hug e amoun t of da ta. In SDN, manag emen t, monitoring and context sensing of the connected componen ts are sim plifie and can be customized. In this paper , SDN-sensed contextual inf orma tion of di fferen t componen ts (computa tional entities, netw ork, IoT devices) are combined tog ether to facilita te scalable resource discov ery in IoT. The proposed policy targ ets balanced processing and cong estion-less forw arding of IoT-da ta. Through sim ula tion studies, it has been demonstr ated tha t the SDN-based resource discov ery in IoT outperf orms the traditional netw orking based approaches in terms of resource discov ery time and Quality of Service (QoS) satisf action rate.
