Reanalysis of bubble chamber measurements of muon-neutrino induced single pion production

Abstract: There exists a longstanding disagreement between bubble chamber measurements of the single pion production channel νµp → µ − pπ + from the Argonne and Brookhaven National Laboratories. We digitize and reanalyse data from both experiments to produce cross-section ratios for various interaction channels, for which the flux uncertainties cancel, and find good agreement between the experiments. By multiplying the cross-section ratio by the well-understood charged current quasielastic cross-section on free nucleons… Show more

“…The data constraining these processes are sparse, and in the case of ν µ +p → µ − +π + +p, the two bubble chamber measurements using 0.5 to ∼ 3 GeV neutrinos reported cross sections that differed by ∼ 30% in absolute normalization [41,42]. (A recent reanalysis obtains consistency between these two data sets [43] , however the generator predictions shown here have not been tuned to the results of this reanalysis.) For the channelν µ +p → µ + +π 0 +n there is only one cross-section data point, obtained with antineutrino scattering on a heavy-liquid (freon CF 3 Br) bubble chamber fill [44].…”

“…A recent paper [45] presents a new fit to the reanalyzed ν µ -deuterium pion production data [43]. The best fit for GENIE 2.6.2 produces an increase in the resonant strength of about 15% and the non-resonant strength was decreased by about 50%.…”

“…The implementation of this model in the NOvA simulation is tuned to match an observed excess of events in data over simulation in bins of reconstructed three-momentum transfer [30]. Additionally, the rate of nonresonant single pion production in charged-current interactions is effectively reduced by 50%, motivated by a recent reanalysis of ν μ -deuterium pion-production data [31,32].…”

“…Parts of these theoretical uncertainties could also originate from the about 30-40% differences between the ANL and BNL data, as discussed [17,23]. However, it seems that this problem has been resolved [24,25].…”
