Abstract:Drops impacting extremely undercooled surfaces solidify and generally adhere to them. We report the fascinating rebound of drops on dry ice in the absence of surface pinning even when they are partially solidified, and demarcate its boundary from no-bounce and fragmentation. Experiments and scaling models reveal that the extent of solidification within the drops dictate these outcomes and control spreading during rebound. Theoretical arguments which consider energy loss due to solidification and bending energy… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
