“…Of concern was the lack of formal supports accessed or offered to families despite almost one half of these children needing to move from home and almost one quarter of children experiencing behavioural problems. This study established three continuing trends: the social isolation of families involved with the criminal justice and prison systems, the poor linkages families have with formal support services and the limited attention paid to arranging the care of dependent children (Kagan ). Enroos () in a Finnish study also found a lack of appreciation within prisons of the diverse experiences of mothers and emphasises the importance of links between prisons and carers in the community.…”

This case study also gave me the opportunity to link my research topic of trauma and the importance of supportive therapeutic relationships in building resilience.…”

“…Miller (1989) theorized that condemned isolation may be the cause of many cases of major depressive disorder. Isolating behavior, similar to what is known as condemned isolation, is also common among children with significant histories of abuse or neglect, and can often be observed in children with reactive attachment disorder (Kagan, 2004). Tucker, Smith-Adcock, and Trepal (2011) have outlined a way to conceptualize using RCT in counseling children, using the "Five E's": encourage self-empathy, explore relational images, educate about power, explain disconnections and conflict, and expand relational capacities.…”
