Objeti vo: Avaliar o conhecimento odontológico e comportamento de retorno de escolares em função do ti po de insti tuição (pública ou privada). Método: A amostra foi composta por 800 crianças matriculadas de 5ª a 8ª série, do ensino fundamental. O instrumento de análise baseou-se em um questi onário, composto por questões abertas, tornando possível a multi plicidade de informações, evitando o direcionamento das respostas e a distorção dos resultados. O seu conteúdo abordou questões relati vas ao últi mo retorno, ti po de retorno prati cado, importância do mesmo e conhecimento sobre a cárie dental e doença periodontal. Realizou-se análise estatí sti ca descriti va. Para o estudo da associação uti lizou-se o teste Qui-quadrado (X2), com nível de signifi cância de 5%. Resultados: Observou-se diferença signifi cati va entre os estudantes das diferentes insti tuições com relação ao tempo (p=0,001) e principal moti vo (p=0,001) da últi ma visita ao denti sta, conhecimento sobre a necessidade de visitar o denti sta roti neiramente (p=0,001), sobre a importância do retorno periódico (p=0,001) e frequência dos mesmos (p=0,001), sobre a cárie dental (p=0,001) e doença periodontal (p=0,001). Descripti ve stati sti cal analysis was done and the chisquared test was used with a signifi cance level of 5%.Results: There was stati sti cally signifi cant diff erence between the students from the diff erent insti tuti ons regarding the ti me (p=0.001) and main reason (p=0.001) of the last visit to the denti st, knowledge of the need of periodic visits to the denti st (p=0.001), importance (p=0.001) and frequency (p=0.001) of periodic recalls, and knowledge of dental caries (p=0.001) and periodontal disease (p=0.001). Patient Stratification for Preventive Care in Dentistry

Prevention reduces tooth loss, but little evidence supports biannual preventive care for all adults. We used risk-based approaches to test tooth loss association with 1 vs. 2 annual preventive visits in high-risk (HiR) and low-risk (LoR) patients. Insurance claims for 16 years for 5,117 adults were evaluated retrospectively for tooth extraction events. Patients were classified as HiR for progressive periodontitis if they had ≥ 1 of the risk factors (RFs) smoking, diabetes, interleukin-1 genotype; or as LoR if no RFs. LoR event rates were 13.8% and 16.4% for 2 or 1 annual preventive visits (absolute risk reduction, 2.6%; 95%CI, 0.5% to 5.8%; p = .092). HiR event rates were 16.9% and 22.1% for 2 and 1 preventive visits (absolute risk reduction, 5.2%; 95%CI, 1.8% to 8.4%; p = .002). Increasing RFs increased events (p < .001). Oral health care costs were not increased by any single RF, regardless of prevention frequency (p > .41), but multiple RFs increased costs vs. no (p < .001) or 1 RF (p = .001). For LoR individuals, the association between preventive dental visits and tooth loss was not significantly different whether the frequency was once or twice annually. A personalized medicine approach combining gene biomarkers with conventional risk factors to stratify populations may be useful in resource allocation for preventive dentistry (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01584479).KEY WOrDs: comparative effectiveness research, personalized medicine, periodontal disease, interleukin polymorphisms, oral health, health care delivery.
