Received signal strength indication‐based localisation method with unknown path‐loss exponent for HVDC electric field measurement

Abstract: The electric field environment under high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines is an important design consideration. In the wireless sensor networks for electric field measurement system under the HVDC transmission lines, it is necessary to obtain the electric field distribution with multiple sensors. The accurate localisation of sensing nodes is essential to the analysis of measurement results. However, most current techniques are limited to constant measurement environment with fixed and known pa… Show more

“…The corresponding potential was obtained by using the current formed by the periodically changing charge. Four non-contact electrometers were also placed on the ground to measure the electric fields [22,23]. The structure of the experimental platform established in the laboratory is given in Figure 3.…”

“…Field‐mill sensors have been used at the Hydro‐Québec's research institute (IREQ) and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), while vibrating electrode field meters have been used by the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) [25, 26]. In our previous work, a DC EFS was designed and that has been used widely in HVDC transmission projects in China [27, 28]. However, the existing DC EFS is not applicable to measure the DC electric field in hybrid corridors configuration.…”

“…It is easy to operate, however, requires several sensors to collect the RSSI value when PD occurs. Then, the signal transmission distance of each sensor is calculated according to the prebuilt RSSI ranging model, and the coordinates of the PD can be determined [15, 16]. However, owing to shadowing and multi‐pathing effects, modelling the UHF signal attenuation becomes difficult, resulting in inaccurate transmission distance measurement by the sensors [17].…”
