Recent advancement in biosensors technology for animal and livestock health management

Abstract: The term biosensors encompasses devices that have the potential to quantify physiological, immunological and behavioural responses of livestock and multiple animal species. Novel biosensing methodologies offer highly specialised monitoring devices for the specific measurement of individual and multiple parameters covering an animal's physiology as well as monitoring of an animal's environment. These devices are not only highly specific and sensitive for the parameters being analysed, but they are also reliable… Show more

“…Glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) were made from glassy carbon plate purchased from Alfa Aesar and broken into pieces. (NH4) 2 MoS 4 (ammonium tetrathiomolybdate), KCl, NaF, K 3 Fe(CN) 6 , K 4 Fe(CN) 6 , and lyophilized 99 % IgG-free bovine serum albumin (BSA) were obtained from Acros Organics; CuSO 4 , KSCN, tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine (TCEP), potassium dihydrogen phosphate, dipotassium dihydrogen phosphate, and 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) were obtained from Sigma Aldrich; and concentrated HNO 3 was obtained from Alfa Aesar. All reagents were used as received.…”

“…Biosensors have been widely investigated for detection of analytes such as glucose and other disease biomarkers [1,2], food allergens and food pathogens [3,4], environmental toxins and contaminants [5], and for monitoring agriculture, bioprocessing, and food processing [6][7][8]. A wide variety of different biosensor formats have been studied and tested, with the most common transduction methods being optical, electrochemical, and acoustic detection.…”

“…Sensor systems are playing an increasingly important role in a wide range of scenarios, including industrial, environmental and healthcare detection challenges [1][2][3][4][5][6] . In particular Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest threats to modern medical practice and there is a strong imperative to reduce and better control the use of antimicrobial drugs, known as antimicrobial stewardship, to slow the increase in prevalence of AMR pathogens 7,8 .…”

“…For these reasons, it is necessary that the dairy industry improves competitiveness by adopting innovative production processes and improving animal welfare. Improvement and miniaturization of sensors along with continuing costs reduction encourage the implementation of new technologies in dairy farms, allowing increases in their efficiency and productiveness [5][6][7] .…”
