Recent Advancements in the Management of Anti-neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody-Associated Vasculitis: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis is a rare multisystem autoimmune condition that causes inflammation of small and medium-sized blood vessels and is more commonly seen in the geriatric population. ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) is typically characterized as necrotizing vasculitis and includes granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA). The mortality rate remains high, with especially cardiova… Show more

“…GPA is a rare aseptic necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis of small and medium-sized blood vessels belonging to a group of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) [ 2 , 3 ]. Cytoplasmic-ANCA (c-ANCA) is the most specific marker for GPA and is seen in 80–90% of GPA cases [ 2 ].…”

“…Cytoplasmic-ANCA (c-ANCA) is the most specific marker for GPA and is seen in 80–90% of GPA cases [ 2 ]. Combination therapies using glucocorticoids and CYC [ 2 , 3 ], or rituximab and CYC [ 3 ] have shown to be successful. Moreover, plasmapheresis is indicated in patients with severe disease that is unresponsive to intravenous glucocorticoids [ 2 ].…”
