“…Currently investigated approaches include surface coatings, modification of surface chemistry and topography of the material, and the incorporation of antimicrobial agents into biomaterials [ 3 ]. Regarding the non-antibiotic antimicrobial agents, there are several options investigated, such as metal ions and oxides, polymers, enzymes, quorum sensing drugs, bacteriophages, or antimicrobial peptides [ 3 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ].…”

“…Following adsorption to the bacterial surface and insertion of viral genetic material into the target, lytic phages hijack host cell machinery for rapid replication, eventually inducing rupture of infected bacteria to ensure viability cannot be restored (Penziner et al, 2021;Ling et al, 2022). This, combined with an absence of integrases necessary for horizontal gene transfer, provides a significant advantage over both lysogenic phages and bacteriostatic antibiotics including tetracyclines, respectively avoiding the perpetuation of resistance genes and exertion of selective pressures facilitating emergence of resistant bacterial strains (Ferriol-Gonzalez & Domingo-Calap, 2021;Ling et al, 2022). These lytic phages may therefore be beneficial in the maintenance of health among humans or non-human animals, as well as in the prevention of antibiotic resistance or zoonoses.…”
