Recent Advances in Chitin and Chitosan/Graphene-Based Bio-Nanocomposites for Energetic Applications

Abstract: Herein, we report recent developments in order to explore chitin and chitosan derivatives for energy-related applications. This review summarizes an introduction to common polysaccharides such as cellulose, chitin or chitosan, and their connection with carbon nanomaterials (CNMs), such as bio-nanocomposites. Furthermore, we present their structural analysis followed by the fabrication of graphene-based nanocomposites. In addition, we demonstrate the role of these chitin- and chitosan-derived nanocomposites for… Show more

“…The use of chitin, chitosan, and nanochitin in energetic and electronic conductivity applications is part of a broader movement to produce electronic devices that are both sustainably-sourced and biodegradable; extensive research has been devoted to the role of chitin and derivatives in this field [ 72 , 129 ]. Chitin and chitosan have been investigated as components in graphene nanocomposites, demonstrating a wide range of energy-related applications including as parts of batteries, solar cells, and fuel cells [ 21 ]. Further work has included composites containing graphene oxide its conducting form, reduced graphene oxide; Dong et al loaded demineralized shrimp cuticles with graphene oxide and heated the cuticles to both reduce the graphene oxide and carbonize the cuticles [ 130 ].…”

“…prior reviews have delved extensively into extraction methods for chitin and related materials; some describe a single suite of methodologies, whether they be chemical or biological, and some approach the field as a whole [ 5 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Other reviews have discussed work related to applications of these materials, including broad reviews providing surveys on a wide range of applications and more focused reviews describing specific fields, such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, and energetic applications [ 3 , 6 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. The objective of this review is to corroborate information regarding both the extraction and application of chitin, chitosan, and nanochitin, including new developments since the publication of those prior review articles.…”

“…However, graphene 2D nano-sheets in the form of sp 2 carbon show wonderful electronic, unique mechanical, significant thermal and good chemical properties [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ]. Thus, polymer nanocomposites containing graphene can be applied in different technologies such as transparent electronics, electromagnetic interference shielding, energy devices, light emitting diodes and lightning protection [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ]. These applications mainly need to the electrical conductivity justifying the wide research on the conductivity graphene-filled products.…”

“…Chitosan (CS) has good biocompatibility, biodegradability, and pH-responsiveness, as well as natural antibacterial properties, non-toxic characteristics, and a wide range of sources. Therefore, it has been used widely in medicine and pharmacy [ 13 14 15 ]. The drug was loaded on CS hydrogels to facilitate targeted delivery to the infected sites of SCVs [ 16 17 ].…”
