Recent advances in date palm genomics: A comprehensive review

Abstract: As one of the oldest fruit trees of the Arabian peninsula, other Middle-Eastern countries, and also North Africa, the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.), is highly significant for the economy of the region. Listed as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the date palm is believed to be the first tree cultivated by human beings, and was probably first harvested for its fruit nearly 7,000 years ago. Initial research efforts in date palm genetics focused on understanding the genetic diversity… Show more

“…Therefore, transcriptomics has emerged as a powerful approach that provides us a highly sensitive and robust examination for multiple attributes such as strandedness, sequence composition, splicing factors, AS and alternative transcription start/stop sites (Figure 7). 158 Since the introduction of microarrays as the mainstream technology of the last decade, researchers have provided dozens of valuable datasets for identifying DEGs in large IBD samples readily available. 159,160 In 2011, Häsler et al 161 first used the commercial and custom-designed microarrays to investigate the gene expressing profile of pre-mRNA splicing factors, and identified intron retention as an exemplary splicing event that was possibly linked to the IBD aetiology.…”

“…However, date palm trees are a diverse group of plants that can be hard to tell apart by the untrained eye ( Zaid and de Wet, 2002 ). A reliable way to identify date palm species is by using DNA tests that can tell the difference between species based on their genetic code ( Al-Khalifah and Askari, 2003 ; Awan et al., 2017 ; Mahdy and El-Sharabasy, 2021 ; Rahman et al., 2022 ). However, this method is expensive, complicated, and requires specialized equipment and laboratory facilities.…”
