Recent Advances in Ethylene Gas Detection

Abstract: The real-time detecting and monitoring of ethylene gas molecules could benefit the agricultural, horticultural and healthcare industries. In this regard, we comprehensively review the current state-of-the-art ethylene gas sensors and detecting technologies, covering from preconcentrator-equipped gas chromatographic systems, Fourier transform infrared technology, photonic crystal fiber-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, surface acoustic wave and photoacoustic sensors, printable optically colorimetric sensor arrays to… Show more

“…Besides being widely employed in the manufacturing of plastics, ethylene (C 2 H 4 ) serves as an important hormone in plants, and real time monitoring systems for ethylene have applications in agriculture, horticulture, and health care. 39 Ethylene is synthesized by plants themselves and is active at concentrations of tens of parts per billion to 1 ppm. 40 Thus, trace ethylene gas concentration monitoring is relevant, for instance in fruit ripening systems.…”

“…[ 171 ] The issue in developing an effective ethylene detector is its cross‐intereference with ethyne and ethane. [ 172 ] Ethylene concentration of smokers and non‐smokers study has been conducted using PAS‐based detector demonstrated 6–7 ppb (before smoking) and 40–60 ppb immediately after smoking. [ 173 ] This data strongly indicates the efficiency PAS‐based ethylene detector at sub‐ppb detection limit.…”

“…Failure to do so could result in massive economic losses for fruit growers and a tremendous waste of resources. , To avoid such calamitous consequences, researchers have delved into establishing cutting-edge methodologies for detecting ethylene. The most commonly employed approaches for monitoring ethylene levels include gas chromatography, photoacoustic spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques. , Nonetheless, the methods mentioned earlier entail intricate sample preprocessing and a slew of other perplexing steps, rendering their use process cumbersome and impractical for promotion in agriculture . To circumvent this predicament, the principle of photoluminescence comes into play.…”
