Recent advances in laboratory assessment of emotion regulation

Abstract: Over the past 15 years, the emotion regulation perspective has been widely integrated into theoretical and applied contexts in clinical psychology and beyond. Recent refinements to behavioral, subjective, psychophysiological and neuroimaging methods allow emotion regulation to be captured and assessed in the laboratory with greater precision. Technological advances enabling investigators to leverage information from multiple modalities are increasingly accessible, and as such, will further efforts to generate … Show more

“…Although previous studies already described the exponential growth of publications in ER (e.g. [8]), two additional features can be identified within this new data. First, this exponential growth is maintained given that in the last 3 years the tendency of exponential growth continues.…”

“…ER became a niche of interest due to diverse reasons, like the transversal and dimensional nature of the process, from clinical to non-clinical population [5] or being a cross-cultural construct [6]. Besides, it is of paramount importance to highlight the accurate but parsimonious operationalizations [7] that allow studying the construct at a research level with multiple psychophysiological, behavioral and subjective methods [8].…”

“…Neuroscience is opening up new avenues for measuring emotional reactivity and regulation (Ochsner & Gross, 2008). A deeper understanding of emotion regulation may result from the combined use of neuroimaging, electroencephalography, event-related potentials, and peripheral psychophysiology, together with behavioral and subjective measures (Seeley, Garcia, & Mennin, 2015). Advances in nonverbal decoding software will further facilitate testing and training the ability to recognize and express emotions.…”

“…When assessing complex, multifaceted processes like emotion regulation, several methods of assessment is of interest to gain more insight into different aspects of emotion regulation, such as psychophysiological assessments ( Seeley et al, 2015 ). As self-report questionnaires may measure the subjective experience of emotion regulation, psychophysiological assessment may be valid assessment of the somatic processes underlying emotional processing.…”
