Recent Advances in Photochargeable Integrated and All-in-One Supercapacitor Devices

Cigdem Tuc Altaf,
Arpad Mihai Rostas,
Adriana Popa
et al.

Abstract: Photoassisted energy storage systems, which enable both the conversion and storage of solar energy, have attracted attention in recent years. These systems, which started about 20 years ago with the individual production of dye-sensitized solar cells and capacitors and their integration, today allow more compact and cost-effective designs using dual-acting electrodes. Solar-assisted batterylike or hybrid supercapacitors have also shown promise with their high energy densities. This review summarizes all of the… Show more

“…Furthermore, PV often faces significant uncertain intraday fluctuations, requiring fast charging of energy-storage devices. Integrating PV and a fast-charging device into a single unit can optimize energy efficiency through self-charging, cell volume, and flexibility, thereby opening up new markets for portable and wearable devices. There are various all-in-one devices that integrate PV and energy storage . In the case of an all-in-one device combining an N-type solar cell with an energy-storage component, the P–N junction enables electrons to move toward the n-type semiconductor when exposed to light, generating electron–hole pairs and establishing the n-type semiconductor as the anode of the battery.…”

“…This electricity is then immediately stored in the energy storage section. The photocharged power pack releases the stored electricity to power the external devices wherever and whenever necessary, indicating the completion of the “photoelectrochemical” energy conversion. Much work has gone into developing integrated systems with excellent power conversion and storage efficiency. But even with these advancements, there are still issues with electrical performance (slow photocharging and discharging rates, relatively low power density, and electrical mismatch in components) and manufacturing processes. , The type of integration also plays a vital role in device performance. For the solar cell and supercapacitor to be fully integrated, they must share the same electrode or substrate.…”
