Recent Advances in Silver Nanoparticles Containing Nanofibers for Chronic Wound Management

Abstract: Infections are the primary cause of death from burns and diabetic wounds. The clinical difficulty of treating wound infections with conventional antibiotics has progressively increased and reached a critical level, necessitating a paradigm change for enhanced chronic wound care. The most prevalent bacterium linked with these infections is Staphylococcus aureus, and the advent of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has posed a substantial therapeutic challenge. Most existing wound d… Show more

“…Healing a wound requires a series of coordinated events, including clotting, inflammation, tissue deposition, fibroplasia, differentiation of the extracellular matrix, cellular contraction, tissue remodeling, and, finally, epithelialization. In order to combat bacterial growth in long-standing wounds and burns, doctors frequently turn to silver compounds like silver nitrate as well as silver sulfadiazine [ 145 , 146 ]. The faster healing of wounds caused by diabetes is achieved with the use of AgNPs, which promote the differentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts.…”

“…Unlike other antibiotics, it prevents the development of bacterial resistance. Silver nanoparticles can also be combined with antibiotics such as sulphanilamide for synergistic antibacterial (against a wide range of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria) and wound healing effects [ 92 , 93 , 94 ]. Other than silver nanoparticles, there are several metal ions (e.g., iron, zinc, titanium, gold, copper, etc.)…”

“…Scaffolds within the nanoscale range have garnered significant interest due to their appealing characteristics, such as their ability to transport bioactive agents, elevated surface area, enhanced mechanical properties, emulation of the extracellular matrix, and substantial porosity. 133 Chitosan nanofibrous materials have the potential to be encapsulated or loaded with metal-based nanoparticles, which can augment their therapeutic efficacy in wound healing applications. Metal-based nanoparticles, specifically silver nanoparticles, have been extensively researched and have demonstrated favorable characteristics, including exceptional antibacterial activity, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and promotion of cell growth.…”
