Recent advances on biomass-fueled microbial fuel cell

Abstract: Biomass is one of the most abundant renewable energy resources on the earth, which is also considered as one of the most promising alternatives to traditional fuel energy. In recent years, microbial fuel cell (MFC) which can directly convert the chemical energy from organic compounds into electric energy has been developed. By using MFC, biomass energy could be directly harvested with the form of electricity, the most convenient, wide-spread, and clean energy. Therefore, MFC was considered as another promising… Show more

“…10,11 The fuel cell technology has been considered as an efficient, clean, and low-cost way to produce electricity for many applications. [12][13][14] The overall ligninto-electricity efficiency by fuel cells has been proven to be much higher than that of electricity generation by combustion. 15,16 One common group of lignin fuel cells, namely indirect lignin fuel cells, can achieve high power density when operated at high temperature.…”

“…These include high cost, the requirement to employ it in large molar excess to pre-catalysts, and the loss of stability during prolonged storage, resulting in loss of activating capabilities and irreproducibility of polymers properties. According to the literature, triisobutylaluminium (TIBA)/borate is an excellent activator of metallocene complexes in the polymerization of olefins [ 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ].…”

“…Therefore, there is a need to develop and adopt sustainable technologies that can treat wastewater and recover resources simultaneously. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are novel and sustainable systems that electrochemically convert chemical energy, present between chemical bonds of organic compounds, into electrical energy (Ren et al 2014;Moradian et al 2021).…”
