Recent Advances on Photocatalytic and Electrochemical Oxidation for Ammonia Treatment from Water/Wastewater

Abstract: Heterogeneous photocatalytic (PC) and electrochemical (EC) oxidation of ammonia/ammonium pollutants in water/wastewater have been thoroughly investigated for ammonia abatement from aqueous streams, as there are continuing needs for developing alternative on-site easily controllable treatment approaches in contrast to conventional methods. Depending on the contamination level, water matrix characters, and regulatory consideration, the PC and EC oxidation of wastewater pollutants or integration with other treatm… Show more

“…13b). When TiO 2 is used under aerobic and humid conditions, various nitrogen-containing species (e.g., NO, NO 2 , NO 2 À , NO 3 , NO 3 À , N 2 O, HONO, and N 2 H 4 ) might be involved as intermediates or produced as by-products during NH 3 oxidation, [188][189][190][191][192][193][194] which complicates the selective production of N 2 . When the experiment was carried out by irradiating TiO 2 in a ow tube with a stream of NH 3 -containing air, HONO was formed as an intermediate.…”

“…In addition, toxic byproducts such as nitrate (NO 3 – ) and nitrite (NO 2 – ) can be generated during the ammonium removal reaction, which causes secondary water pollution . Electrochemical (EC) and photoelectrochemical (PEC) treatments have been studied as an alternative remediation technology to remove ammonium . The reported technologies utilized in situ generated reactive chlorine species (RCS including Cl • , Cl 2 •– , and HOCl/OCl – ) as an oxidant, but they also generated byproducts (ClO 3 – from RCS, NO 3 – from NH 4 + , etc.)…”
