Software Defined Networking (SDN) has been seen as a revolutionary and exciting network technology that aims to enable control and network management of various network types, whether wired or wireless. Nevertheless, SDN research focuses very little on wireless communication and, more specifically, on Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs). Moreover, the issue of routing is vitally important in WMNs, but the legacy and traditional routing protocols cannot make the most of multiple paths between the source node and destination node due to the complexity and cost of the network. In this paper, we present SDNMesh, an SDN based routing architecture for WMNs. We combine SDN with WMN to allow mesh networks to meet current user requirements with several resources, coverage, and scalable high bandwidth capability. Apart from the mentioned capability, SDN's unified approach leads to better network capacity management. Experiments have been carried out using the Mininet-WiFi simulation tool to create a network environment that allows integration of the two networking paradigms, centralized, and decentralized. Simulation results show that our SDNMesh routing solution performs better in terms of network performance metric throughput, packet loss ratio, and delay while comparing with traditional routing approaches such as OLSR, BATMAN, and an SDN based Three-Stage routing protocols. Moreover, experimental results show that SDNMesh gives better results in terms of the mentioned performance metrics.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are very prone to ongoing security threats due to its resource constraints and unprotected transmission medium. WSN contains hundreds and thousands of resource-constrained and self-organized sensor nodes. These sensor nodes are usually organized in a distributed manner; thus, it permits the creation of an ad hoc network without predefined infrastructure or centralized management. As WSNs are going to get control of real-time applications, where a malicious activity can cause serious damage, the inherent challenge is to fortify the security enforcement in these networks. As a solution, software-defined network (SDN) has come out and has been merged with WSN to form what is known as software-defined wireless sensor network (SDWSN). SDWSN has come into existence, and it legitimizes network operators with more flexibility and control over the network. SDWSN has more tightened the security enforcement based on the global view and centralized control of the network topology. Moreover, machine learning (ML)–based and deep learning (DL)–based network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) have been introduced to the SDN environment to protect the networks against anomaly threats. In this review article, we illustrated the SDN–based security approaches to WSN followed by its architectures, advantages, and possible security threats. Finally, ML/DL–based NIDS integrated with the SDN controller is proposed as a complete solution for the WSN environment to confront the ongoing anomaly threats and to sufficiently protect the network against both known and unknown attacks.

In recent years, the prevalence of Wi-Fi-enabled devices such as smartphones, smart appliances, and various sensors has increased. As most IoT devices lack a display or a keypad owing to their tiny size, it is difficult to set connectivity information such as service set identifier (SSID) and password without any help from external devices such as smartphones. Moreover, it is much more complex to apply advanced connectivity options such as SSID hiding, MAC ID filtering, and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) to these devices. Thus, we need a new Wi-Fi network management system which not only facilitates client access operations but also provides a high-level authentication procedure. In this paper, we introduce a remote connectivity control system for Wi-Fi devices based on software-defined networking (SDN) in a wireless environment. The main contributions of the proposed system are twofold: (i) it enables network owner/administrator to manage and approve connection request from Wi-Fi devices through remote services, which is essential for easy connection management across diverse IoT devices; (ii) it also allows fine-grained access control at the device level through remote control. We describe the architecture of SDN-based remote connectivity control of Wi-Fi devices. While verifying the feasibility and performance of the proposed system, we discuss how the proposed system can benefit both service providers and users.
