Recent and Tertiary deep-sea limpets of the genusPectinodontaDall (Mollusca: Gastropoda) from New Zealand and New South Wales

Abstract: Deep-sea wood-ingesting limpets of the genus Pectinodonta Dall (Acmaeidae: Pectinodontinae) are recorded for the first time from New Zealand and Australia. Pectinodonta komitica n. sp., P. waitemata n. sp., and "Roya" coni/ormis from the Early to Middle Miocene of New Zealand are the first recorded fossil representatives of the genus. Recent species are P. aupouria n. sp. and P. morioria from New Zealand, and P. kapalae n. sp. from New South Wales. Pectinodontine diet is discussed.

“…Another group of molluscs, which are apparently hosting the xylophagous bacteria are chitons from families Leptochitonidae, Ferreiraellidae, and Nierstraszellidae; all belonging to suborder Lepidopleurina (Sirenko 2001a,b, 2004). Very common at modern sunken wood communities are also acmaeid, cocculinid, and pseudococculinid limpet gastropods (Wolff 1979; Marshall 1985, 1986; McLean & Harasewych 1995; Hasegawa 1997; Pailleret et al. 2007), skeneids, vitrinellids, hyalogyrinids, and xylodisculids (Marshall 1988; Hasegawa 1997).…”

“…In its faunal composition it is surprisingly similar to its modern and Cenozoic counterparts, at least in respect to fossilizable, shell‐bearing taxa. Five of the species, the limpet, the two provannids and the two skeneiform gastropods most likely grazed on xylophagous microbes, like their modern analogues (Marshall 1985, 1988; Warén & Bouchet 2001). In total abundance, these five species comprise ca.…”

“…Key taxa are the acmaeid limpet Pectinodonta and the bathymodiolin mussel Idas n. sp. Extant Pectinodonta occurs exclusively at wood-falls (Marshall 1985;Lindberg & Hedegaard 1996) and Recent Idas is known from wood-and whale-falls, and cold-seeps ( Jones et al 2005). However, fossil cold-seep carbonates are very distinctive geologic features that cannot be mistaken for wood-fall concretions.…”
