Recent data on Mediterranean diet, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and life expectancy

Abstract: Benefi ts of dietary moderation when on a mediterranean diet type (MD) have been known for well over half a century. In the past, there has been a vigorous renewal of interest in preventive potential of MD. This review is unique, by focusing on the very recent confi rmatory data on the MD, all published within the fi rst half of 2014. Benefi ts of MD in preventing and reducing cardiovascular disorders (CVD), known before, have been strongly confi rmed. While there is little doubt regarding potential benefi t o… Show more

“…Western diets have been linked to increased concentration of IL-6 and CRP inflammatory cytokines 50,55 , and a reduction of glucose and metabolic transport in hippocampal regions in rats 56 . Conversely, middle-aged individuals adherent to a Mediterranean diet were associated with reduced levels of these same cytokines 57 and lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome 58 and cardiovascular disorders 59 . Thus, there is some preliminary evidence that suggests dietary patterns may alter inflammatory profiles.…”
