Recent Development of Bioinformatics Tools for microRNA Target Prediction

Abstract: : MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are central players that regulate the post-transcriptional processes of gene expression. Binding of miRNAs to target mRNAs can repress their translation by inducing the degradation or by inhibiting the translation of the target mRNAs. High-throughput experimental approaches for miRNA target identification are costly and time-consuming, depending on various factors. It is vitally important to develop the bioinformatics methods for accurately predicting miRNA targets. With the increase of RN… Show more

“…We performed a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, which is a graphical plot that illustrates the diagnostic ability of a binary classifier system. To evaluate the performance of our model, we estimated the area under the ROC curve (AUC) and its 95% confidence interval 43 45 . All data processing and analyses were done with MATLAB (R2020a, The MathWorks, Inc.) and R (R Foundation for Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria).…”

“…Competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) are essentially endogenous RNAs that compete for shared microR-NAs (miRNAs) to disrupt each other's functions and thus promote the occurrence and development of multiple cancers, as proven by increasing bioinformatics and cell biology evidence 2,3 . Endogenous RNAs include long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), circular RNAs (circRNAs), and pseudogenes, while miRNAs act as "sponges" 4 .…”

“…( 5 ). MicroRNAs (miRNA) are single-stranded and evolutionarily conserved sequences of short non-coding RNAs (∼21–25 nucleotides), which act as endogenous repressors of gene expression by mRNA degradation and translational repression ( 6 , 7 ), and have been demonstrated to have critical roles in cell differentiation, development, proliferation, signaling, inflammation, and cell death ( 8 , 9 ). Hence, they are considered to be the promising candidates for novel targeted therapeutic approaches to lung diseases.…”
