Recent developments and highlights in rhinitis and allergen immunotherapy

Abstract: This review paper aims to provide an overview of recent developments in the field of allergic and non‐allergic rhinitis, as well as allergen immunotherapy. Recent advances in phenotyping and endotyping various forms of rhinitis have brought us one step closer towards tailoring treatment more appropriately for a given patient. Updates on local allergic rhinitis are also covered. Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is an area of significant interest, with multiple original papers and recent position papers and guidelin… Show more

“…Additionally, in many AR patients it is difficult to establish the clinical relevance of IgE‐sensitizations due to a lack of consistency with the symptom pattern, or due to multiple positive SPTs . In these situations, it is challenging to design the composition of allergen immunotherapy (AIT) . Moreover, local allergic rhinitis (LAR) is a nasal disorder characterized by a localized allergic response in the absence of systemic atopy .…”

“…126,127 At present, CR is The omics revolution was one of the major driving forces of recent developments that enabled investigation of almost everything at the molecular level of proteins, lipids, and small molecules including innumerable DNA and RNA sequencings with a hypothesis-free approach simplistically subclassified as allergic rhinitis (AR) and nonallergic rhinitis (NAR). 128 Although phenotyping of rhinitis has important consequences in the treatment of the entity, 129 the presently employed phenotypes cannot meet the needs of precision medicine;…”

“…It is being increasingly recognized as the way forward in improving patient care for those with chronic conditions. In the airway, a prime example of precision medicine is allergen immunotherapy . It is tailored to each individual's sensitization profile; there are reliable biomarkers to predict success of therapy; it potentially prevents development of asthma and sensitization to new allergens; and it requires active participation of the patient in his care.…”
