Recent Developments in Capillary Electrophoresis–Mass Spectrometry of Proteins and Peptides

Abstract: Many researchers have invested considerable efforts toward improving capillary electrophoresis (CE)-mass spectrometry (MS) systems so they can be applied better to standard analyses. This review highlights the developments in CE-MS of proteins and peptides over the last five years. It includes the developments in interfaces, sample-enrichment techniques, microfabricated devices, and some applications, largely in capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE), capillary isoelectric focusing (CIEF) and capillary isotachop… Show more

“…The CE separation conditions have a direct impact on the ESI-MS analysis and several parameters have to be considered for CE-ESI-MS analysis [28][29][30][31]. In this study, a number of parameters were initially tested with CE-UV, including coating stability, pH and ionic strength of the separation buffer, injection times and different separation voltages.…”

“…Recent developments of instrumentation for the hyphenation of capillary electrophoresis to mass spectrometry (CE-MS) have generated significant interest in this technique for the characterization of biomolecules [196,197] such as peptides [198], proteins [199][200][201][202] or biopharmaceuticals [203][204][205]. Different electrophoretic modes such as capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE), capillary isoelectric focusing (CIEF) or capillary gel electrophoresis (CGE) can be employed to separate entities according to their charge or their size.…”

“…Capillary electrophoresis (CE), possibly coupled to MS, can be a good alternative to these chromatography techniques [26,27]. In addition to its various possibilities of coupling detection, CE is a high resolution technique, particularly for enantiomers [28].…”
