Recent Developments in the Conversion of Synthesis Gas to Short‐Chain Alcohols over Cu‐Co‐Based Catalysts

Abstract: Cu‐Co‐based catalysts provide promising systems for higher alcohol synthesis (HAS) due to a synergistic dual‐site mechanism. Bimetallic Cu‐Co (alloy) nanoparticles are assumed to be the active sites, but cobalt carbide (Co2C) forming under reaction conditions also seems to influence the formation of C2+OH. Na‐doped Co‐modified Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 is applied as benchmark catalyst within the Carbon2Chem® subproject L4 providing suitable performance in terms of CO conversion and C2+OH selectivity. However, further optim… Show more

“…the overall concept with steel mill, gas pipes for steel mill process gases, water electrolysis, units for gas cleaning and conditioning as well as the technical center with a test facility for the production of C2‐C4 alcohols is shown. In this project carbon‐cobalt‐copper catalysts are used , . A successful scale‐up of this CCU approach can help to increase the sustainability of the steel mill, but also of alcohol production.…”

“…It is questionable whether the functionality of copper in the electroreduction of CO 2 can be further clarified if another element, [111] such as Co[ 66b , 66c , 66e ] or Ni, is added to the copper‐based catalyst because they change the reactivity in a complex way. The chemistry of the support is likewise critical.…”

“…28,29 In addition, additives such as alkali metal promoters and supports have a great inuence on the activity and selectivity of such catalysts. 30 Cu-Co catalysts must have alkali metals, otherwise the selectivity of alcohols will be very low. The role of the carrier is also obvious.…”
