Recent Developments on Nanotechnology in Agriculture: Plant Mineral Nutrition, Health, and Interactions with Soil Microflora

Abstract: Plant mineral nutrition is important for obtaining higher agricultural productivity to meet the future demands of the increasing global human population. It is envisaged that nanotechnology can provide sustainable solutions by replacing traditional bulk fertilizers with their nanoparticulate counterparts possessing superior properties to overcome the current challenges of bioavailability and uptake of minerals, increasing crop yield, reducing fertilizer wastage, and protecting the environment. Recent studies h… Show more

“…Iron is added in the form of soil fertilizers or chelated compounds in soil-less cultivation to facilitate iron uptake for enhanced production of agricultural and bioenergy crops. Agricultural research facilities and commercial units are investigating innovative formulations of Fe fertilizers such as the Fe micronutrient containing iron and phosphates [33][34][35]. The two major targets in designing these fertilizers are to significantly increase the plant growth or production and to minimize the addition of excess fertilizers to the soil for environmental sustainability.…”

“…Their occurrence is widespread but influence on living organisms still needs to be evaluated. The relevant literature data are quite contradictory with emphasis put either on positive or negative influence of CeO 2 NPs on human health and plant development (Achari and Kowshik 2018;Dimkpa 2014;Pošćić et al 2017;Hussain et al 2019). The continuously growing production, widespread use and resistance to abundant waste treatment technologies addresses the issue of surplus nanomaterial storage and waste management.…”

“…Nanotechnology is a fast growing field that provides for the development of materials that have new dimensions, novel properties, and a broader array of applications (e.g., (Achari and Kowshik 2018;Agarwal et al 2018;Kráľová 2015a, 2017a,b;2018a,b;Prasad et al 2017a,b;Sekhon 2014;Ventola 2017). It is regarded as one of the key technologies of the 21 st century.…”
